Choosing any gaming console can be an important decision, they are not cheap items to buy and with so many accessories available for each one it is imperative that you get the right one for you first. With that in mind I thought I would write a bit about each one letting you know about the benefits and flaws of each in an attempt to make your choice that little bit easier.
Nintendo’s latest offering was a revolutionary piece of equipment when it launched late 2006. With its motion sensitive remote controls it was something different to what gamers had been experiencing before. It is now available in Black or white with all the matching controllers. The games available for the Wii include Super Mario and Donkey Kong as well as all of Nintendo’s other successful franchises. The games in general for the Wii are aimed at a more family orientated game night, with great titles like Wii party being very good fun.
Graphically though the Wii falls slightly short of its other two main rivals with the hardware not up to the same level. If you have young children then this console is perfect as it encourages them to get up and play as opposed to just vegging out in front of the TV.
Microsoft Xbox 360
This console has been around for quite a while now in its second incarnation boasting a slimmer and sleeker appearance. The games catalogue is extensive and is aimed at a more serious gamer. That being said it has its fair share of innovative family titles such as viva piñata which is completely different to anything I had played before.
If online gaming is your thing then Microsoft’s Xbox Live is a very reliable and enjoyable experience. The dashboard system allows you to find your friends that are currently online an easy task. On the other hand if High Definition Movies is what you crave this may not be the right choice for you as Microsoft’s HD DVD format failed and blu ray took over. Although you can get sky TV on your Xbox if you wish.
One thing that the Xbox wins with, in my opinion is the Xbox Kinect. An amazing piece of kit and has totally changed the way we play games. You don’t need a controller, you are it. The launch titles are spectacular with the Kinect Sports proving to be as much of a workout as if you were actually participating in the real sport.
Sony Playstation 3
Sony’s console was last on the scene but do not underestimate it, graphically superior to its closest rivals the console is capable of stunning high definition graphics. Again the titles are aimed more at a mature audience but with titles such as the Ratchet and Clank and the Little Big Planet franchise it has something to offer younger gamers.
The Playstation 3 also has blu ray technology built in so you get to watch the latest High definition movies without having to buy a separate piece of equipment. As the console can update its firmware online it has no trouble keeping up with all the latest developments in the movie industry.
Not to be outdone by its competitors the ps3 has its own motion detection peripherals in the ps3 move brand. This again is highly enjoyable but seems very similar to the Wii the launch titles are very similar to other companies i.e. having a sports title. But it is great fun nonetheless.
These thoughts are only my personal opinion, but if you are looking for a good gaming experience with the added fun of motion detection then I would recommend the Xbox with Kinect as it will take some beating. However if you are a hardcore gamer who loves your movies the playstation 3 should be your first choice.
